Cerro Pedernal, often called "Pedernal" by local people, is a unique, flat-topped mountain in northern New Mexico. Its name comes from the Spanish words for "flint hill." This special mountain is located on the northern side of the Jemez Mountains, near Abiquiu Lake. It's part of the beautiful Santa Fe National Forest.

Pedernal's highest point reaches 9,862 feet (3,006 meters) above sea level. The very top of the mountain is made of a hard rock layer called a caprock. This caprock was formed by ancient volcanoes in the Jemez Volcanic Field.

Discovering Cerro Pedernal

Cerro Pedernal is more than just a mountain; it's a place with a rich history and stunning views. Its unique shape makes it stand out in the New Mexico landscape.

What is a Mesa?

Pedernal is actually a type of landform called a mesa. A mesa is like a natural table, with a flat top and steep sides. Mesas are often found in dry areas and are formed when softer rocks erode away, leaving behind a harder, flat layer on top.

A Mountain of History

Long ago, the Gallina people, who were a prehistoric group, used the rocks from Pedernal. They found a special type of rock called chert here. Chert is a very hard rock, similar to flint, that can be shaped into sharp tools. The Gallina people used this chert to make tools for hunting and daily life.

Art and Adventure

Pedernal is also famous because of a well-known artist named Georgia O'Keeffe. She was an American painter who loved the New Mexico landscape. O'Keeffe painted Pedernal many times, showing its beauty in different seasons and light. She loved the mountain so much that her ashes were scattered on its top after she passed away.

Today, the steep cliffs of Pedernal are a popular spot for rock climbing. Adventurers enjoy the challenge of climbing its rocky faces. The mountain offers amazing views of the surrounding area, including Abiquiu Lake and other distant mountains.
