Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı (born Musa Cevat Şakir; 17 April 1890 – 13 October 1973) was a famous Turkish writer. He was also known by his pen-name "The Fisherman of Halicarnassus" (Turkish: Halikarnas Balıkçısı). He wrote many novels, short stories, and essays. Early Life and Education
Cevat Şakir was born in 1890 into the Kabaağaclı family. He grew up on Büyükada, an island near İstanbul. His sisters, Fahrelnissa Zeid and Aliye Berger, also became famous artists.
His father, Mehmed Şakir Pasha, helped him study at Oxford University. Cevat later returned to Turkey. In 1925, he was sent to live in Bodrum for three years. He loved Bodrum so much that he decided to stay there.
Writing Career and Bodrum
After his time in Istanbul, Cevat Şakir returned to Bodrum. He lived there for 25 years. He chose his pen name, "The Fisherman of Halicarnassus," to honor Bodrum. Halicarnassus was Bodrum's ancient name.
He helped make Bodrum famous. Before him, Bodrum was a small town known for fishing and sponge-diving. He wrote about it, bringing it to the attention of Turkish thinkers and the public. This helped Bodrum become a major international tourist spot. He is also known for creating the idea of the Blue Cruise. This is a popular boat trip along the beautiful coasts of Turkey.
One of his poems about Bodrum is displayed in the city. It says: When you reach the hill, you will see Bodrum. Don't think you'll leave as you came. Others before you thought the same, as they departed they left their soul behind in Bodrum.
Cevat Şakir was a very smart and interesting person. He greatly influenced new ideas in Turkey during the 20th century. He cared a lot about nature. Many trees he planted in Bodrum are still growing there today.
Tributes and Legacy
On April 17, 2015, Google celebrated his birthday with a special Google Doodle.
His niece, Shirin Devrim, wrote about him in her 1994 book. The book is called A Turkish Tapestry: The Shakirs of Istanbul.
