Early Life and Education
Chad Everett was born in South Bend, Indiana, in 1937. His birth name was Raymon Lee Cramton. His father, Harry Clyde "Ted" Cramton, was a racecar driver and mechanic.
When he was young, his agent, Henry Willson, changed his name to Chad Everett. Chad didn't mind because his old name was hard to explain. He grew up in Dearborn, Michigan. He went to Fordson High School. There, he played quarterback on the football team. He also started acting in plays when he was 14.
Chad later went to Wayne State University in Detroit. In his third year, he joined an acting group. This group toured India. He once said he became an actor because he got bored easily. Acting let him explore many different feelings. He earned a degree in drama from the university.
Acting Career
Chad Everett's first important acting job was in a TV show called Surfside 6 in the early 1960s. A year later, he got a big role in the movie Claudelle Inglish. He also played a deputy in the TV show The Dakotas.
After acting in several movies and TV shows in the 1960s, he got his most famous part. This was playing Dr. Joe Gannon in the medical drama Medical Center. He starred alongside James Daly.
Chad Everett appeared in many other films and TV shows. Some of his movies include The Singing Nun and Airplane II: The Sequel. He also appeared as a guest star in over 40 TV series. These include popular shows like Melrose Place, The Nanny, and Murder, She Wrote.
In 1986, Chad Everett received a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. This is a special honor for actors.
He also used his voice for animated characters. In 1987, he was the voice of Ultraman Chuck in the movie Ultraman: The Adventure Begins. He also voiced characters in The New Yogi Bear Show. The family of famous actor John Wayne chose Chad to be the voice of John Wayne's robot figure at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
In 2001, Chad Everett had a small but important role in the movie Mulholland Drive.
Other Work
Chad Everett wrote a book of romantic poems. He dedicated this book to his wife, Shelby Grant.
For many years, he helped host the Labor Day Jerry Lewis Telethon. This event raised money to help people with muscular dystrophy, a muscle disease.
Personal Life
Chad Everett married actress Shelby Grant on May 22, 1966. They got married in Tucson, Arizona. At that time, Chad was filming a movie there. They had two daughters named Katherine and Shannon.
Chad and Shelby were married for 45 years. Shelby passed away in 2011 after a brain aneurysm. Chad said his family helped him a lot through tough times. He said Shelby always supported him. She would tell him she was there for him. He also said that without his family, he would have been in big trouble.
Shelby said Chad was very romantic. He sent her so many flowers when they were dating that her balcony looked like a flower garden. He also wrote poems to her and their daughters. They renewed their marriage vows every seven years.
In 1972, Chad was on a TV show called The Dick Cavett Show. He joked that he owned "three horses and three dogs and a wife." He added that his wife was "the most beautiful animal I own." Another guest, Lily Tomlin, was surprised and walked off the set. Chad later said he felt bad about it. He explained that he meant his wife also "owned" him.
After Medical Center ended, Chad felt a bit stuck. He found it hard to get new movie roles.
