The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a very important leader in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This person is the head of a special group called the Presidency. Together, this group acts as the country's head of state.

Think of the head of state as the main representative of a country. The current Chairman is Željka Cvijanović. She started her role on November 16, 2024.

How the Presidency Works in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The way Bosnia and Herzegovina is run is quite unique. Its rules are set out in the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This constitution says that the Presidency has three members. These members represent the main groups of people living in the country.

  • One member is from the Bosniak community.
  • Another member is from the Serb community.
  • The third member is from the Croat community.

The Bosniak and Croat members are chosen by voters in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Serb member is chosen by voters in Republika Srpska. These are two main parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Serving in the Presidency

Once elected, all three members serve together for four years. A person can be elected to the Presidency up to two times in a row. However, there is no limit to how many times someone can serve in total, as long as they don't serve more than two terms back-to-back.

Even though three people lead the country together, one of them is chosen to be the Chairman. This Chairman position changes between the three members. Each person takes a turn for eight months. The person who gets the most votes in the election usually becomes the first Chairman for that four-year period.
