Željka Cvijanović (born Željka Grabovac on 4 March 1967) is a politician from Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is currently the Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a group of three leaders who share the role of head of state. She has also been the chairwoman of this Presidency since November 2024.
Before this, she was the president of Republika Srpska from 2018 to 2022. She is a member of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats political party. From 2013 to 2018, Cvijanović served as the prime minister of Republika Srpska. In 2022, she became the first woman to be a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina since the Bosnian War ended.

Early Life and Education
Željka Grabovac was born in Teslić, which is now part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on March 4, 1967. Before she became a full-time politician, she worked as an English teacher.
Cvijanović studied at several universities. She attended the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Sarajevo. She also studied at the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Law in Banja Luka. She earned a master's degree in diplomatic and consular law.
Political Career
Cvijanović started her career as an English teacher. She also worked as an interpreter and assistant for the European Union Monitoring Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Later, she became an advisor for European Integration to the prime minister of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik. She also managed the Unit for coordination and European integration.
From 2010 to 2014, Cvijanović was an expert member of the Committee for European Integration. This committee is part of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska. On December 29, 2010, she became the minister of economic affairs and regional cooperation.
Prime Minister of Republika Srpska
On March 12, 2013, Cvijanović was appointed prime minister of Republika Srpska. She was the first woman to hold this important position. She served as prime minister until 2018.
In the 2014 general election, Cvijanović ran for the Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She did not win this election. However, she was reappointed as prime minister of Republika Srpska.
In the 2018 general election, Cvijanović was elected president of Republika Srpska. She took office on November 19, 2018. Her term as president ended on November 15, 2022.
Some countries, like the United Kingdom, expressed concerns about certain political actions taken by Cvijanović and Milorad Dodik in 2022. The United States also raised similar concerns in 2023.
Presidency (2022–Present)
2022 General Election
On July 1, 2022, Cvijanović announced she would run for the Bosnian general election. She was a candidate for the Serb member of Bosnia and Herzegovina's three-person Presidency.
The election took place on October 2, 2022. Cvijanović won with 51.65% of the votes. This made her the first female member of the Presidency since the end of the Bosnian War. She was sworn in as a Presidency member on November 16, 2022.
Working in the Presidency
After the 2022 election, a new government was formed. This government was led by a group of political parties. They chose Borjana Krišto to be the new Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers. The Presidency officially nominated her for this role. Cvijanović voted in favor of this nomination.
Foreign Policy and International Relations

Cvijanović has met with leaders from other countries. On November 9, 2023, she met with French President Emmanuel Macron in France. They talked about how Bosnia and Herzegovina and France can work together.
In January 2024, Cvijanović attended a summit in Uganda. This meeting was for the Non-Aligned Movement. She spoke about how the ideas of non-alignment are still important today.
European Union Membership
On December 15, 2022, the European Union recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina as a candidate country. This means the country can now start the process to join the EU. Cvijanović supported this decision.
On February 8, 2024, the Presidency agreed to start talks with Frontex. This is an important step for Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the EU. On March 21, 2024, all 27 EU leaders agreed to open talks for Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the EU.
Personal Life
Željka Cvijanović is married to Aleksandar Cvijanović. They have two sons together. Her family background includes both Bosnian Serb and Bosnian Croat heritage.
On April 2, 2021, Cvijanović received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
