Šefik Džaferović (born 9 September 1957) is a Bosnian politician. He served as the Bosniak member of the country's Presidency from 2018 to 2022. The Presidency is a special three-person group that leads Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He is a high-ranking member of the Party of Democratic Action, a political party in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before joining the Presidency, he was a member of the national House of Representatives for many years. Since 2023, he has been a member of the national House of Peoples.

Early Life and Education
Šefik Džaferović was born in 1957 in a town called Zavidovići. This town is in modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, but at that time it was part of a country called Yugoslavia.
He went to high school in Zavidovići. After that, he studied law at the University of Sarajevo. He graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1979. Before becoming a politician, Džaferović worked in legal jobs and for the police in his hometown and in Zenica.
Start of Political Career
Džaferović began his political journey in 1996. He was elected to a local council in the Zenica-Doboj Canton. In the same year, he became a representative in the Federal House of Peoples.
A few years later, in 2000, he joined the national House of Peoples. In 2002, he was elected to the national House of Representatives. He served there until 2018. During his time in the House of Representatives, he was its chairman several times.
Serving in the Presidency (2018–2022)
In 2018, Šefik Džaferović decided to run for a spot in the Presidency. This is a very important group that leads the country. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a special system where three people share the role of president. Each person represents one of the country's main groups: Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats. Džaferović ran to be the Bosniak member.
He was elected to the Presidency on 7 October 2018. He served as the Bosniak member from 2018 to 2022.
Leading the Presidency
The three members of the Presidency take turns being the "Chairman." The Chairman leads the meetings and represents the Presidency.
- On 20 March 2020, Džaferović became the Chairman of the Presidency. He held this role for eight months.
- On 20 November 2020, another member, Milorad Dodik, took over as Chairman.
- On 20 March 2022, Džaferović became Chairman again, following the rotation rule.
Dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic
When the COVID-19 pandemic started in March 2020, the Presidency made important decisions. They decided to set up quarantine tents at the country's borders. These tents were for Bosnian citizens returning home. Everyone arriving had to stay in self-quarantine for 14 days.
Other countries helped Bosnia and Herzegovina during the pandemic.
- In March 2021, the president of Serbia visited and donated 10,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.
- A few days later, the president of Slovenia also visited and promised to donate 4,800 AstraZeneca vaccines.
Džaferović received his first vaccine dose in July 2021 and his second dose in August 2021.
Foreign Relations
As a member of the Presidency, Džaferović also played a role in Bosnia and Herzegovina's relationships with other countries.
Relations with Russia
In December 2020, Džaferović refused to attend a meeting with the Russian foreign minister. He felt that the minister had shown disrespect to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In February 2022, when Russia recognized two regions in Ukraine as independent, Džaferović spoke out. He said that Bosnia and Herzegovina supports Ukraine's borders and independence. He called Russia's decision a "flagrant violation of international law." When Russia invaded Ukraine, Džaferović stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina stood with the Ukrainian people.
Working with the European Union
Bosnia and Herzegovina wants to join the European Union. In September 2020, Džaferović and other Presidency members said that Bosnia could become an EU candidate in 2021 if it made important changes.
Džaferović met with many important EU leaders.
- In September 2021, he met with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
- In December 2021, he met with Germany's Minister of State for Europe.
- In May 2022, he met with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. They talked about Bosnia and Herzegovina joining the EU.
Relations with Turkey
Bosnia and Herzegovina has strong ties with Turkey.
- In March 2021, Džaferović and other Presidency members visited Turkey. They met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
- During this visit, Turkey promised to donate 30,000 COVID-19 vaccines to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- They also agreed to recognize each other's driving licenses.
- An agreement was signed to work together on building projects, including a highway from Bosnia's capital, Sarajevo, to Serbia's capital, Belgrade.
In August 2021, President Erdoğan visited Sarajevo. He met with the Presidency members to discuss more cooperation in business and building projects.
Later Political Career
After his term in the Presidency ended in November 2022, Džaferović continued his political work. On 16 February 2023, he became a member of the national House of Peoples.
Personal Life
Šefik Džaferović is married to Vildana Džaferović. They got married in 1980. They have two children, a son named Jasmin and a daughter named Jasmina. The family lives in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
