Discovering Chamorro's Past
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This treaty meant Spain gave Puerto Rico to the U.S. It then became an unincorporated territory. This means it is controlled by the U.S. but is not a state.
In 1899, the U.S. government took a census of Puerto Rico. A census is an official count of the population. This count found that Chamorro and a nearby barrio called Espino had 986 people living there together.
