How Channagiri Got Its Name
Long ago, this area was known as Asandinadu when the Western Ganga dynasty ruled it. Over time, different kingdoms took control. These included the Kalyani Chalukyas and the Pandyas of Uchchangi.
In the 17th century, the Keladi Nayaka Kingdom became powerful here. A famous queen, Rani Chennamma of Keladi (who ruled from 1672 to 1697), is said to have built a strong fort on the hill. The town of Channagiri was then named after her, combining 'Chenna' from her name and 'giri' meaning hill.

Channagiri Hill Fort
Channagiri has an old hill fort that was built around 1770. It rises about 200 feet high to the west of the town. The fort has two strong walls made of rubble, protected by moats (ditches filled with water). The main entrance is on the north side, where the ground is not as steep.
Inside the fort, at the very top of the hill, there is a temple dedicated to Sri Ranganatha. This temple is also known as Bete-Ranganatha. It features a statue of Vishnu standing upright, holding a chakra (disc) and a sankha (conch shell) in his back hands. He also holds an arrow in his front hands. Below him is a small pedestal with Garuda, a mythical bird. There are also carvings of his consorts on each side.
To the southwest of this temple, there is a smaller shrine. It is dedicated to Bhutappa and contains the head of the god, whose tongue sticks out of his mouth.
