Chantal duPont (born in 1942, died in 2019) was a talented Canadian artist from Montreal. She was known for working in many different art forms, like video, photography, painting, sculpture, and writing. For a long time, she also taught art as a professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal. People especially remember her for her amazing, award-winning video art.
About Chantal duPont
Chantal duPont studied art at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1964 to 1966. Later, she earned her Master's degree at Concordia University between 1967 and 1969.
Her art often explored ideas about who we are and our memories. Her video art was shown at many festivals around the world. She won awards in countries like Belgium, Colombia, France, and Portugal.
Chantal duPont often went to Montreal's International Festival of Films on Art. In 2007, the festival showed many of her video art pieces. This was a special event, happening a year after she won the Bell Canada Award.
Besides making her own art, she also taught and helped many young artists. One of her most famous videos is Du front tout le tour de la tête. In 2001, this video won awards in Lisbon, Clermont-Ferrand, and Quebec.
Chantal duPont was one of the important women who helped create digital art in Quebec. She worked alongside other artists like Martine Époque and Andrée Beaulieu-Green. When she won the Bell Canada Award, the judges said her works were "stunningly beautiful." They also noted how she combined technical skill with performance to create powerful art about identity and memory.
Chantal duPont passed away in Montreal on February 25, 2019.
