Charlene Drew Jarvis was born on July 31, 1941, in Washington, D.C.. She is an American educator and a former politician. Before her political career, she was a scientific researcher. She also served as the president of Southeastern University until 2009. Charlene is the daughter of Charles R. Drew, a very important doctor. He was a pioneer in developing blood plasma and blood transfusion techniques.
About Charlene's Life
Charlene Drew Jarvis has an impressive educational background. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Oberlin College in 1962. After that, she continued her studies at Howard University. There, she received a Master of Science degree in psychology in 1964. She then went on to earn her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), in neuropsychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1971.
Becoming a Politician
Charlene Drew Jarvis became a politician in Washington, D.C. She represented Ward 4 on the Council of the District of Columbia. A "ward" is like a neighborhood or district in a city. The person who held the Ward 4 seat before her, Arrington Dixon, became the chairman of the council. This left the Ward 4 seat open.
Charlene won a special election to fill this open seat on May 1, 1979. She was very popular and was reelected to the council many times. She won elections in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996. This means she served on the council for a long time, helping her community.
End of Her Council Career
In 2000, Charlene Drew Jarvis ran for reelection again. However, she was defeated in the Democratic primary election. The person who won against her was Adrian Fenty. Interestingly, Adrian Fenty also attended Oberlin College and Howard University, just like Charlene. After this, Charlene Drew Jarvis continued her work in education, eventually becoming a university president.
