Who Was Charles Arms Carleton?
Charles Arms Carleton was born on May 27, 1836. He lived during a very important time in American history, the American Civil War. This war was fought between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy). Carleton chose to fight for the Union.
He was a dedicated soldier. He served in the Union Army, which was the army of the United States. His actions during the war showed his commitment.
Starting His Military Journey
Carleton began his military career as a private. He joined the 12th New York State Militia. This was a group of soldiers who served for three months. It was a short but important start to his service.
On September 18, 1861, he received a promotion. He became a first lieutenant. He also became an adjutant for the 4th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. An adjutant is an officer who helps with administrative tasks. They manage records and orders for their unit.

He held this important role until August 1, 1865. His time as an assistant adjutant-general was brief but significant. He was officially released from volunteer service on December 19, 1865.
A Special Honor: Brevet Brigadier General
Even after the war ended, Carleton's service was remembered. On December 8, 1868, President Andrew Johnson nominated him for a special honor. He was nominated to become a brevet brigadier general of volunteers.
A "brevet" rank is an honorary promotion. It recognizes a soldier's bravery and good service. It does not always come with higher pay or command. The United States Senate confirmed this appointment on February 16, 1869. This meant his brevet rank was official. It was dated back to March 13, 1865.
