Early Life and Education
Charles Noel Carnegie was born on March 20, 1854. His father was James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk, who was an explorer and a poet. His mother was Catherine Hamilton Noel. Charles had three older sisters. When his mother passed away in 1855, his father later remarried. Charles then gained seven younger half-siblings.
He attended Harrow, a famous school. He also studied at St Andrews University. Later in 1902, the university gave him an honorary degree.
His Career and Roles

Charles Carnegie held many important positions. He was an honorary colonel in the Forfar and Kincardine Artillery. This means he was a leader in a military group. He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant for three areas in Scotland: Angus, Aberdeenshire, and Kincardineshire. He started this role in 1900.
He was also a Justice of the Peace for Aberdeenshire and Angus. In 1905, he became the 10th Earl of Southesk after his father passed away. His father had worked hard to get the family's titles back in 1855.
Charles was known for being an excellent game shot in Scotland. This means he was very skilled at hunting.
Kinnaird Castle
Kinnaird Castle was the family home for over 600 years. It was located in a beautiful Scottish glen (a valley). In 1921, a fire sadly destroyed most of the castle. Only a small part of the servants' area was saved. Many valuable books and a famous painting were lost in the fire.
Lord Southesk decided to rebuild the castle. He was also a big collector of art. He owned many paintings by famous old artists and a large collection of antique gems.
Family Life
On August 1, 1891, Charles married Ethel Mary Elizabeth Bannerman. She was the only child of Sir Alexander Bannerman, 9th Baronet. Together, they had five children: three sons and two daughters.
- Lady Katherine Ethel Carnegie (born 1892)
- Charles Alexander Carnegie, 11th Earl of Southesk (1893–1992). He married Princess Maud in 1923. Princess Maud was the granddaughter of King Edward VII.

- Lady Mary Elizabeth Carnegie (1899–1996). She married Vice-Admiral Conolly Abel Smith.
- Hon. James Duthac Carnegie (1910–1996). He was a Major in the British Army. His wife, Claudia, was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
Lord Southesk passed away on November 10, 1941, at Kinnaird Castle. Lady Southesk died a few years later in 1947.
