Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charles Claude Guthrie (born September 26, 1880 – died April 1963) was an American scientist who studied how the human body works, a field called physiology. He was known for his important work in surgery, especially with blood vessels.

Growing Up and Learning

Charles Claude Guthrie was born in Gilmore, Missouri. He loved learning and went to college. He earned his first degree, a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), from the University of Missouri in 1901. Later, he continued his studies and received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the University of Chicago in 1908.

A Career in Science and Teaching

After finishing his education, Dr. Guthrie became a teacher and researcher. He taught physiology, which is the study of how living things function. He also taught pharmacology, the study of medicines and how they affect the body.

He was a professor at Washington University in St. Louis from 1906 to 1909. After that, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh and continued teaching there after 1909.

Important Discoveries and Books

Dr. Guthrie wrote a book called Blood-Vessel Surgery and its Applications in 1912. He also wrote many articles about his research. His work focused on:

  • How blood reacts and changes in the body.
  • Methods for bringing people back to life, like resuscitation.
  • Problems with not enough blood flow to the brain or other parts of the body, known as anemias.
  • Studying tissues that were separated or not connected to the body.
  • New ways to use sutures (stitches) and connect blood vessels together, a process called anastomosis.

Working with Alexis Carrel

Dr. Guthrie worked closely with a French doctor named Alexis Carrel on vascular surgery. This type of surgery deals with blood vessels. Alexis Carrel later won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their shared work. Some people believed that Dr. Guthrie should have received more credit for these important discoveries.
