Charles Frederick Barager was an important person from New York who lived a very interesting life. He was born on December 5, 1838, in a town called Candor, in Tioga County, New York. During his life, he worked as a lawyer, a merchant (someone who buys and sells goods), and a manufacturer (someone who makes things). He also became a politician, helping to make laws for New York State.

The Early Life of Charles Barager

Charles was the son of Samuel Barager, who was also a politician, and Ruhamah Barager. He went to a local school in Candor. When he was about 20 years old, in 1859, he traveled south and spent a year in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. He planned to finish his education back in Candor, but then the American Civil War started.

Serving in the Civil War

Instead of going back to school, Charles decided to join the army. He became a first lieutenant in the 26th New York Volunteers. Later, in 1862, he was promoted to captain in the 137th New York Volunteers.

He was seriously injured during a very important battle called the Battle of Gettysburg. Because of his injuries, he had to leave the army in November 1864. In 1867, he got married to Mary Markell, and they had four children together.

A Career of Many Paths

After the war, Charles went to Albany Law School and graduated in 1868. He then became a lawyer. However, he tried many different jobs before settling down.

He worked in the black walnut lumber business in Missouri and Illinois. Then, he grew oranges in Florida. After that, he was a merchant in the Red River Valley. Finally, he worked with lumber again near Lake Superior.

In 1876, he came back home to Candor. He bought the Candor Woolen Mills, where he started making horse blankets.

Charles Barager in Politics

Charles Barager also served his community and state in politics.

  • In 1879, he was the Supervisor for the Town of Candor. This means he helped manage the town's affairs.
  • He was a member of the New York State Assembly for Tioga County in 1884 and 1885. The Assembly is part of the state's law-making body.
  • He then became a member of the New York State Senate in 1886 and 1887. The Senate is the other part of the state's law-making body.
