Charles Frederick Barclay (born May 9, 1844 – died March 9, 1914) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Pennsylvania. This means he was elected to represent his area in the United States Congress.

Charles F. Barclay was born in Owego, New York. This was in 1844. When he was just one year old, his family moved to Pennsylvania. He grew up there and went to school.

Education and Learning

Charles attended Painted Post High School. He also studied at Coudersport Academy. After finishing his studies, he worked as a school teacher for several years. He helped educate young people in his community.

Serving His Country in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Charles Barclay joined the army. He became a private in a special group called Company K. This was part of the One-Hundred and Forty-ninth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He joined in 1862 and served until 1865. By the end of his service, he had earned the rank of captain.

After the war, he continued his education. He attended Belfast Seminary in New York. Later, he studied law at the University of Michigan. This university is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Even though he studied law, he decided not to become a lawyer.

A Career in Business

Instead of practicing law, Charles Barclay went into business. He worked with his older brother in the lumber industry. They were very involved in the lumber business in Sinnamahoning, Pennsylvania. This was a big part of his life before he entered politics.

Charles Barclay became active in politics. He was a member of the Republican Party. In 1900, he was chosen as a delegate to the 1900 Republican National Convention. This important meeting took place in Philadelphia.

Serving in Congress

In 1907, Charles Barclay was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served in the Sixtieth Congress. He was then re-elected and served in the Sixty-first Congress. He worked as a U.S. Representative for four years.

In 1910, he decided not to run for re-election. After leaving Congress, he continued to work in business. He lived and worked in Washington, D.C..

Later Life and Legacy

Charles Frederick Barclay passed away on March 9, 1914. He was buried in Wyside Cemetery in Sinnamahoning, Pennsylvania. He is remembered for his service in the Civil War and his time representing Pennsylvania in Congress.
