Charles Henry Fasnacht (born March 27, 1842 – died July 21, 1902) was a brave American soldier. He fought during the American Civil War, a big conflict in U.S. history.

Fasnacht earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive in the United States. He received this special award for his amazing actions during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. This battle happened in Virginia on May 12, 1864. He was officially given the award on April 2, 1878.

Charles Henry Fasnacht was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His birthday was March 27, 1842. When the American Civil War began, he decided to join the fight. He became a soldier in the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry.

Heroic Actions and Capture

On May 12, 1864, Fasnacht showed incredible courage during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. During the intense fighting, he was wounded. He was then captured by the Confederate soldiers.

Even after being captured, Fasnacht did something very brave. He managed to hide a captured enemy flag under his shirt. This was a very risky move!

Rescue and Continued Service

Later, while being moved to Richmond, Virginia, Fasnacht was rescued by Union troops. This was great news for him and his side. After his rescue, he continued to fight in the war. He served until July 1, 1865, when the war was ending.

Charles Henry Fasnacht lived until July 21, 1902. He passed away in Pennsylvania. His remains are buried at Greenwood Cemetery. He is remembered as a hero who showed great bravery during a very important time in American history.
