Charles Henry Simonton (born July 11, 1829 – died April 25, 1904) was an important judge in the United States. He served as a federal judge on two different courts. These were the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Circuit Courts for the Fourth Circuit. Before that, he was a judge for the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Early Life and Career

Charles Henry Simonton was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 11, 1829. He went to college at South Carolina College, which is now known as the University of South Carolina. He graduated in 1849.

Becoming a Lawyer

After college, Simonton studied law on his own. This was a common way to become a lawyer back then. He finished his law studies in 1851. From 1851 to 1886, he worked as a private lawyer in Charleston.

Serving in Government

Simonton also held several public offices. From 1851 to 1852, he was an assistant clerk for the South Carolina House of Representatives. He later became a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served three times: from 1858 to 1862, from 1865 to 1866, and again from 1877 to 1886. During the American Civil War, he was a Colonel in the Confederate States Army from 1861 to 1865.

Becoming a Federal Judge

Charles Henry Simonton became a federal judge through appointments from President Grover Cleveland.

Judge for South Carolina

On September 3, 1886, President Cleveland first appointed Simonton to be a judge for the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. This was a temporary appointment. Later, on December 9, 1886, President Cleveland officially nominated him for the same job. The United States Senate approved his appointment on January 13, 1887. He started his work as a district judge on that day. He served in this role until December 28, 1893.

Judge for the Fourth Circuit

Simonton then moved to a higher court. On December 11, 1893, President Cleveland nominated him for a joint position. This meant he would serve on both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Circuit Courts for the Fourth Circuit. The Senate confirmed his appointment on December 19, 1893. He received his official commission on the same day. He continued to serve as a federal judge until he passed away. Charles Henry Simonton died on April 25, 1904, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
