Charles "Charlie" Mays Sr. (February 3, 1941 – April 11, 2005) was an amazing American Olympic athlete and a Democratic Party politician. He was known for representing the 31st Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly. Charlie Mays was a true champion, earning many awards in track and field. He also worked hard to serve his community through politics.

Who Was Charles Mays Sr.?

Charlie Mays Sr. was born on February 3, 1941. He grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. From a young age, he showed incredible talent in sports. He became a successful track and field athlete and later a dedicated public servant. He passed away on April 11, 2005.

A Star Athlete

Charlie Mays was a standout athlete, especially in track and field. He competed while attending Lincoln High School in Jersey City. He earned many impressive titles:

  • He was an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) All-American eleven times. This means he was recognized as one of the best athletes in the country by the AAU.
  • He won nine AAU championships in the long jump.
  • He also won six AAU championships in the 440-yard dash.
  • Charlie Mays was named AAU Track and Field Athlete of the Year three times.
  • He was a two-time NCAA champion. He won titles in both the long jump and the mile relay for college athletes.

His athletic career peaked when he competed in the long jump at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. This is a huge achievement for any athlete!

Serving His Community

After his successful sports career, Charlie Mays turned his attention to public service. He wanted to help the people of his hometown.

  • He served for six years on the city council in Jersey City. As a city council member, he helped make important decisions for the city.
  • He then served two terms in the New Jersey General Assembly. This is part of the state government where laws are made for all of New Jersey.

Beyond Sports and Politics

Charlie Mays also made a lasting impact outside of his direct political roles.

  • In 1973, he founded the Black Athletes Hall of Fame. This organization was created to honor and celebrate the achievements of Black athletes. He later served as its executive director.
  • His alma mater, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, inducted him into their Hawks Hall of Fame in 1982.
  • In 2007, Hudson County, New Jersey honored him by naming the running track at Lincoln Park after him. This was a tribute to his legacy as an athlete and a community leader.
