Charles McDougall was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, on September 21, 1804. His parents were John and Margaret McDougall.

He married Maria Griffith Hanson on April 15, 1830, in Indianapolis, Indiana. They had six children together. One of his sons, Thomas Mower McDougall, also became a notable person.

Charles McDougall passed away on July 25, 1885, in Clarke County, Virginia. He was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

His Military Career

McDougall served as a surgeon (a type of doctor) in the United States Army. He was a military doctor during several important conflicts. These included the Black Hawk War, the Seminole Wars, and the American Civil War.

He also had other important jobs during his career. He worked at the United States Military Academy at West Point, which is a famous school for army officers. He also served at Fort Winnebago.

On March 13, 1865, Charles McDougall received a special promotion. He was made a Brevet Brigadier General. This means he was given the rank of Brigadier General for his excellent service, even though he might not have held that rank permanently.
