Charles James Wright, born on April 5, 1964, is a former American football player. He was a defensive back, which is a player who tries to stop the other team from catching the ball or running with it. Charles played for a few different teams during his career. He spent two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was chosen by the Cardinals in the 1987 NFL draft after playing college football at the University of Tulsa. He also played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Arena Football League (AFL).

Early Life and College Football Journey

Charles James Wright was born in Carthage, Missouri. He went to Carthage Senior High School in his hometown.

After high school, Charles started his college football journey at Highland Community College and then at Fort Scott Community College. Later, he moved to the University of Tulsa to play for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane team. He played there in 1985 and 1986. In 1985, he caught four interceptions, which means he took the ball away from the other team four times. He also returned five punts for 21 yards. The next year, in 1986, Charles made four more interceptions, running one back for a touchdown! He also returned 18 punts for 158 yards.

Playing in the NFL

Charles Wright was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the tenth round of the 1987 NFL draft. This was the 257th player chosen overall in that draft. He officially joined the team on July 19, 1987. He played in three games for the Cardinals before leaving the team in November 1987.

In 1988, Charles signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He played in three games for them before moving on. Later that year, in November 1988, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in two games for the Buccaneers before his time with them ended in December 1988.

Charles also signed with the Cleveland Browns in March 1990, but he was released by them in August of that year.

Playing in Other Leagues

After his time in the NFL, Charles Wright played in other professional football leagues.

Canadian Football League (CFL) Experience

From 1990 to 1993, Charles played for the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played in 29 games for them. During his time with the Rough Riders, he made 70 tackles and caught eight interceptions. In 1994, he played in two games for the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos, where he recorded one sack and eight tackles.

Arena Football League (AFL) Career

In 1996, Charles Wright joined the Memphis Pharaohs in the Arena Football League (AFL). He played in all 14 games for the Pharaohs that season. He had a busy year, making 63 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles. He also caught four interceptions, broke up seven passes, and forced three fumbles. Even with his efforts, the Pharaohs finished the season without any wins. After the 1996 season, the Pharaohs team became the Portland Forest Dragons.

In November 1996, Charles was part of a trade to the San Jose SaberCats. He played in one game for the SaberCats in 1997, where he made three solo tackles and three assisted tackles.
