Charleston Township is a small area of land in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in the United States. It's called a "civil township" because it's a type of local government area.

In 2020, about 1,904 people lived here. This was a little less than the 1,975 people counted in 2010.

Geography of Charleston Township

Charleston Township is located on the eastern side of Kalamazoo County. To its east, you'll find the city of Battle Creek. To the west is the smaller city of Galesburg.

The village of Climax is right along the southern edge of the township. Part of the village of Augusta is also in the northern area.

The total area of the township is about 35.6 square miles (92.1 km2). Most of this, 34.8 square miles (90.1 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.77 square miles (2.0 km2), is water.

The Kalamazoo River flows through the northwestern part of the township. It runs between Augusta and Galesburg.

Roads and Travel

Interstate 94, a major highway, goes right through the middle of Charleston Township. This highway connects Battle Creek in the east with Kalamazoo in the west. There is one exit from Interstate 94 that serves the township.

History of Charleston Township

The first people to settle in a part of Charleston Township arrived in 1833. They were Robert Burdick and three of his married sons. They had moved from Otsego County, New York. This area became known as "Burdick Settlement."

People of Charleston Township

In 2000, there were 1,813 people living in Charleston Township. There were 679 households, which are groups of people living together in one home. Most of these households, 533, were families.
