History of Charlie, Texas
In 1878, this area was first called Big Wichita Valley. That's when Henry T. Dunn built a store south of the Red River. Later, a man named Charlie Taylor bought the store from Dunn. Soon after, the place became known as Charlie, named after him!
This store was a very popular spot for local ranchers, farmers, and even some Native Americans from the nearby Indian Territory (which is now Oklahoma). It was a busy place for many years. A post office opened in Charlie in 1882. By the mid-1920s, more than 200 people lived in Charlie.
However, the community's population started to shrink after World War II and the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a time in the 1930s when many people lost their jobs and money. After 1930, the Charlie post office closed down. In 2000, the population was estimated to be 65 people. By 2010, the population had grown a bit to 90 people.
