Charlie Burchill, born on November 27, 1959, is a talented musician and songwriter from Scotland. He is best known as the guitarist and a founding member of the famous rock band, Simple Minds.
Charlie's Unique Guitar Sound
In the early 1980s, Charlie Burchill's guitar playing for Simple Minds was very special. He created an atmospheric sound. This means his guitar added a dreamy, wide feeling to the music.
He used special effects pedals like 'delay' and 'chorus'. Delay makes a sound repeat quickly, like an echo. Chorus makes a sound seem thicker, like many instruments playing at once. These effects helped his guitar create soft layers of sound. They often played behind the band's strong drums and bass. You can hear this style clearly on their 1982 album, New Gold Dream.
After 1983, with the album Sparkle in the Rain, the band's sound changed. Charlie's guitar became more noticeable. It moved from the background to the front of the music.
Besides playing guitar, Charlie also played other instruments. He played the violin and saxophone on the band's first three albums. After 1989, he started playing most of the keyboards in the studio. Charlie Burchill and lead singer Jim Kerr are the only original members of Simple Minds who are still performing with the band today.
Charlie's Musical Gear

Charlie Burchill has used a Gretsch White Falcon guitar since the early 1980s. He also owns a modern black version of this guitar. He also plays several Gibson Les Paul guitars from 1969. As of 2017, he uses Matchless amplifiers to make his guitar sound loud and clear.
