Charles Quinton Murphy (born July 12, 1959 – died April 12, 2017), known as Charlie Murphy, was an American comedian, actor, and writer. He was famous for his work on the TV show Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central. He also co-starred in the sitcom Black Jesus. Charlie was the older brother of well-known actor and comedian Eddie Murphy.
Charlie Murphy's Life and Career
Charlie Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on July 12, 1959. His mother, Lillian Murphy, worked as a telephone operator. His father, Charles Edward Murphy, was a transit police officer, actor, and comedian.
When he was a teenager, Murphy spent some time in jail. After his release in 1978, he joined the United States Navy. He served for six years as a boiler technician, working with ship engines.
Start in Entertainment
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Murphy had small roles in several movies. He also worked behind the scenes with a hip hop group called K-9 Posse. He was an executive producer for their first album in 1988. He also helped write some of their songs. His first big movie role was in the 1993 film CB4, where he played a character named Gusto.
Rise to Fame on Chappelle's Show
Charlie Murphy became widely known for his appearances on Chappelle's Show. He was a regular performer and writer for the popular sketch-comedy series. His most famous parts were the Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories sketches. In these, he shared funny stories about his adventures with his brother's famous friends. These stories included funny encounters with celebrities like Rick James and Prince.
After the show's host, Dave Chappelle, left, Charlie Murphy and Donnell Rawlings hosted special "lost episodes." These episodes were made from sketches that were filmed before Chappelle left.
Other Acting and Comedy Work
In 2005, Murphy acted in the movie King's Ransom. He played a character named Herb. He also lent his voice to characters like Spock in Star Trek 2.0 shorts and a dog in his brother Eddie's 2007 film, Norbit.
On March 20, 2009, Charlie Murphy started his own sketch comedy series called Charlie Murphy's Crash Comedy on Crackle. He also had a stand-up comedy special called Charlie Murphy: I Will Not Apologize, which aired on Comedy Central in 2010.
Murphy also appeared in the show 1000 Ways to Die and the sitcom Are We There Yet?. From 2014 to 2015, he played the character Vic in the Adult Swim show Black Jesus.
Personal Life and Passing
Charlie Murphy lived in Tewksbury Township, New Jersey. He was married to Tisha Taylor Murphy from 1997 until she passed away in December 2009. She died from cervical cancer. They had two children together, and Charlie also had another child from a previous relationship. He was also a skilled karate practitioner.
Charlie Murphy passed away from leukemia on April 12, 2017, in New York City. He was 57 years old.
