Dr. Charlotte Staples Lewis is a character from the TV show Lost. Actress Rebecca Mader plays her. Charlotte is a cultural anthropologist. She joins a team on a mission to the mysterious island where Oceanic Flight 815 crashed.

When she first arrives, a plane crash survivor named John Locke holds her captive. Later, another team member takes her place. Charlotte helps stop a dangerous gas from being released on the island. She also forms a close friendship with Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies). Charlotte sadly passes away in Daniel's arms. This happens because frequent time travel causes her severe headaches.

The creators of Lost first planned for Charlotte to be American. But they were very impressed with English actress Rebecca Mader. So, they changed Charlotte's background to British. She was supposed to be in only eight episodes. However, a writers' strike meant her role grew bigger. She ended up appearing in fifteen episodes across two seasons. Many people liked Charlotte and the other new characters at first. Her later stories received mixed reviews, but Rebecca Mader's acting was often praised.

Charlotte's Story on the Island

Early Life and Discoveries

In one part of the show, we see a young Charlotte Lewis. She lives with her parents on the island. They are part of a science group called the Dharma Initiative. An adult Daniel Faraday meets young Charlotte. He tries to warn her not to come back to the island when she leaves. We see her leaving the island during a big event.

Charlotte grows up in Bromsgrove, England. She does not know where she was born. She studies at the University of Kent. Then she earns a special degree in cultural anthropology from the University of Oxford. She became interested in anthropology because she wanted to find her birthplace.

While exploring in the Sahara Desert, Charlotte finds something strange. It is the bones of a polar bear. The bear has a collar with the Dharma Initiative logo. This discovery helps her on her journey.

Joining the Mission

A rich businessman named Charles Widmore chooses Charlotte for a special mission. She joins Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume (Ken Leung), and Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey). Their goal is to travel to the island. They need to find Widmore's rival, Ben Linus (Michael Emerson).

Charlotte has to jump out of a helicopter. This happens during a lightning storm over the island. She lands safely on December 23, 2004.

First Days on the Island

When Charlotte arrives, some of the plane crash survivors capture her. They think she is dangerous. Charlotte sees a flare from her team. But the survivors do not want to check it out. Charlotte tries to leave, and Ben shoots her. Luckily, she is wearing a bulletproof vest and is safe.

Ben then reveals that Charlotte's team is looking for him. They are not there to rescue the survivors. Later, the group meets Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) and Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews). They agree to trade Miles for Charlotte.

Working with Daniel Faraday

After reuniting with Faraday, Charlotte tests his memory. She uses playing cards. She notes that he is getting better at remembering things.

That night, Charlotte and Faraday secretly go to a Dharma Initiative station called the Tempest. There, they stop a possible release of poison gas.

Later, at another station, the Staff, they get medical supplies. Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim) notices Charlotte smiling. His wife, Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim), had said in Korean that Charlotte would know Daniel liked her. Jin confronts Charlotte in Korean. He tells her he will hurt Daniel if she does not promise to take Sun off the island.

Staying on the Island

Daniel starts taking survivors to the freighter. But Charlotte decides to stay on the island. She believes she has found her birthplace. She kisses Daniel as he leaves.

Time Travel and Farewell

After Ben makes the island disappear, Charlotte, Daniel, and others begin to jump through time. Charlotte gets nosebleeds and headaches. She realizes she cannot remember her mother's maiden name.

During one time jump, Charlotte, Daniel, and Miles are captured. This happens in 1954. Daniel tells Charlotte he loves her. After another time jump, her nosebleed gets worse. She collapses. As she is dying, Charlotte tells Daniel something important. She remembers living on the island as a child. She also recognizes Daniel as the man who told her not to return to the island.

In the Afterlife

In the sixth season of Lost, we see what the characters experience in the afterlife. Charlotte is set up on a blind date with James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway). They spend the night together. But Sawyer finds her looking through his things. He asks her to leave. He later goes to apologize, but she tells him he missed his chance. In the very last episode, at a concert, Charlotte and Daniel are reunited.
