Charpeney Lake is a major freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. It is the main source for the Saint-Jean North-East River, which is part of the larger Saint-Jean River system. The lake is located in the wild, unorganized territory of Lac-Jérôme, within the Minganie Regional County Municipality in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec.
Geography of Charpeney Lake
Charpeney Lake is about 6.7 km (4.2 mi) long. At its widest point, in the northern part, it measures about 1.6 km (0.99 mi) across. The lake sits high up, about 541 m (1,775 ft) above sea level, surrounded by mountains.
The lake is actually split into two main parts by a narrow passage called the Kauapauakaht Pass. Water flows into Charpeney Lake from several places. Five streams bring water from the east, and water also comes from Fauteux Lake to the south.
Where is Charpeney Lake?
The mouth of Charpeney Lake, where its water flows out, is located:
- About 74.4 km (46.2 mi) southeast of the border between Labrador and Quebec.
- About 46.7 km (29.0 mi) north of where the Saint-Jean North-East River ends.
- About 31.2 km (19.4 mi) southwest of a bend in the La Romaine River.
- About 95.7 km (59.5 mi) north-west of the town of Havre-Saint-Pierre.
From Charpeney Lake's mouth, the water flows into the Saint-Jean North-East River for about 70.4 km (43.7 mi). Then, it continues down the Saint-Jean River (Minganie) for another 65.7 km (40.8 mi). Finally, the Saint-Jean River empties into the northern shore of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The Name of Charpeney Lake
The study of place names is called toponymy. The name "Charpeney" comes from a French family name. There is also a Charpeney township, which is a type of land division, located on the North Shore of Quebec.
The official name "Lac Charpeney" was formally recognized on December 5, 1968. This happened when the Commission de toponymie du Québec was created. This commission is responsible for naming and standardizing place names in Quebec.
