Chattaroy is a small, unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington, in the United States. This means it's a group of homes and businesses, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.

You can find Chattaroy about 10 miles north-northeast of Spokane. It's located right where the Little Spokane River and Deer Creek meet. The community is also situated along U.S. Route 2, a major highway.

How Chattaroy Got Its Name

Originally, this community was called Kidd. However, the Great Northern Railroad asked for a name change. There was another town named Kidd in Montana, also on their train line. They wanted to avoid confusion for travelers and deliveries.

Two women, Mrs. Robert Cowgill and Mrs. Alexander B. Owen, helped rename the community. They were reading a novel at the time with a hero named Chattaroi (without a "y"). They liked the name and changed the French spelling of "roi" to "roy," making it Chattaroy.

History of Chattaroy

Chattaroy Post Office
The Chattaroy Post Office, a local landmark.

Chattaroy was founded in the 1880s. It was located a couple of miles east of a train station called Dragoon, which belonged to the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway. People were buried in the Chattaroy cemetery as early as 1888.

The Chattaroy post office has been open since 1888. This means people have been sending and receiving mail there for a very long time!

Chattaroy in 1900

By the year 1900, Chattaroy was a small but active community. About 250 people lived there. The town had two general stores where people could buy everyday items. There was also Barker's Hotel, a place for travelers to stay.

A drug store was run by a Dr. Smith. The community also had a blacksmith shop, where metal items were made or repaired. For education, there was a public school with about 60 students. A Congregational church, led by Reverend F. McConaughy, and a Sunday school were also part of the community. There was even a hall for the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal organization.

Climate

Chattaroy experiences a type of weather known as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This is often shortened to "Csb" on climate maps.

This means that the summers in Chattaroy are warm but not extremely hot. They are also quite dry. The average monthly temperatures during summer do not go above 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius).
