History of Chaumont
The village of Chaumont has an interesting past. It was named after a French family with a famous castle.
Early Settlement and Economy

By July 1853, Chaumont had about 50 homes. It also had other buildings that supported the community.
Becoming a Village
Chaumont officially became a village in 1874. This meant it could have its own local government. Later, in 1990, the oldest part of the village was recognized. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Chaumont Historic District. This means it's a special place with important history.
People in Chaumont have voted twice on whether to join the larger town of Lyme. Both times, the villagers voted to stay a separate village. The first vote was in 1999, and the second was in 2012.
