Chen Qimei (simplified Chinese: 陈其美; traditional Chinese: 陳其美; pinyin: Chén Qíměi; born January 17, 1878 – died May 18, 1916) was an important Chinese revolutionary. He was a close friend and political partner of Sun Yat-sen, who is often called the "Father of Modern China." Chen Qimei also guided and taught Chiang Kai-shek when he was younger. He helped create the Republic of China, which was a new government for China. He was also the uncle of two other important figures, Chen Guofu and Chen Lifu.

Early Life and Revolution
Chen Qimei was born in Wuxing, Zhejiang, China. In 1906, he traveled to Japan to study. While there, he joined a group called the Chinese Tongmenghui. This group wanted to bring big changes to China.
Joining the Revolution
In Japan, Chen Qimei became good friends with Chiang Kai-shek, who was also from Zhejiang. In 1908, Chen encouraged Chiang to join the Tongmenghui. This was an important step for Chiang's future career.
Leading the Revolution
In 1911, a major event called the Wuchang Uprising happened in China. This uprising was the start of a revolution. Chen Qimei's forces took control of Shanghai, a very important city.
Military Governor
After taking Shanghai, Chen Qimei was made the military governor of the region. This meant he was in charge of the army and the government there.
Forming a New Party
Later, the revolution faced problems when a leader named Yuan Shikai tried to gain too much power. Chen Qimei and Sun Yat-sen had to leave China and go to Japan. While in Japan, they formed a new political group called the Chinese Revolutionary Party. This party later became known as the Kuomintang, or the Chinese Nationalist Party.
Legacy
Chen Qimei was returning to Shanghai to continue the revolution. However, he was assassinated on May 18, 1916. It is believed that a general loyal to Yuan Shikai, named Zhang Zongchang, was responsible.
Founding Father
Chen Qimei is remembered as one of the early heroes of the revolution. He is seen as one of the "founding fathers" of the Republic of China. He helped create the new country.
Influential Family
He was also the oldest member of what became known as the Chen Family. This was one of the four most powerful and influential families in China at that time.
Remembering Chen Qimei
A university was originally named after him, called Yingshi University. After the Chinese Civil War, parts of this university became part of today's Fudan University and Zhejiang University. There is also a monument dedicated to him in Huzhou, Zhejiang, China.
