Cherry Gardens is a small, partly rural area located near Adelaide, in South Australia. It is part of the City of Onkaparinga, which is a local government area. This area is known for its peaceful, natural surroundings.
A Look at History
Cherry Gardens got its name from a special tree called the native cherry (Exocarpos cupressiformis). These trees grew in large numbers there a long time ago.
Some of the first European settlers in the area were brothers named John and Benjamin Chambers. They were given land in Cherry Gardens before the year 1844.
The Cherry Gardens Post Office first opened its doors on July 10, 1850. It served the community for many years before closing in 1976.
Community Services
The local fire service, known as the South Australian Country Fire Service, has a brigade in Cherry Gardens. This brigade helps protect the area from fires.
They also provide support for water bomber aircraft at the Cherry Gardens Airstrip. These planes are very important for fighting large bushfires from the air.
In January 2021, a bushfire started in the Cherry Gardens area. Firefighters worked hard to control it. Sadly, two houses were damaged during this event.
