Cherry Grove is a small, unincorporated community in Washington County, Oregon. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that doesn't have its own local government. Cherry Grove is located on the north side of the Tualatin River. This river flows out of the Northern Oregon Coast Range mountains and into a flat area called Patton Valley.

The Story of Cherry Grove

Cherry Grove was started in 1911 by a man named August Lovegren. He was an immigrant from Sweden. Before coming to Cherry Grove, he ran a lumber mill in Washington state. He arrived in the United States in 1883.

How Cherry Grove Got Its Name

August Lovegren wanted to name the new community after a fruit. He thought of "Appleton," but another place in Oregon already had that name. So, his cousin suggested "Cherry Grove." This was the name of her home in Minnesota.

Early Businesses and Power

Lovegren built a sawmill in Cherry Grove. In September 1911, he started a private electricity system for the community. He used the sawmill's boiler to help make power. By September 1913, he finished building a dam on the Tualatin River. This dam created a large pond to hold logs for the mill.

Challenges and Changes

In January 1914, a big flood hit Cherry Grove. The flood destroyed both the dam and the boiler. This left the community without electricity for a long time. It wasn't until 1935 that Portland General Electric started providing power to Cherry Grove. The community also had its own post office from 1912 until 1959. After that, mail service moved to Gaston.
