History of Cherryvale

Santa Fe Route Map 1891
This map from 1891 shows the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway route.

Cherryvale was founded on land that once belonged to the Osage people. The first person to buy land and settle here was Mr. Abe Eaton. He later sold his land to a railroad company. This company eventually became part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

The railroad company officially planned the town in 1871. Cherryvale got its name because it is located in the valley of Cherry Creek.

In 1873, a big fire destroyed most of the town. But the people quickly rebuilt it. By 1880, Cherryvale officially became a city. Later, in 1889, natural gas was discovered here. This gas was used to power factories and light up streets and homes. Oil was found a few years after that.

Today, Cherryvale is the main office for the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad. This railroad runs for 511 miles across Kansas and Oklahoma. In 2011, the railroad painted one of its locomotives, number 4158, in the blue and white colors of the local high school. This train is now kept at the large train yard north of Cherryvale.
