Early Life and First Steps in Modeling
Cheryl Tiegs was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota. Her father, Theodore, worked on a car assembly line and later became a funeral director. In 1952, her family moved to Alhambra, California.
A friend encouraged Tiegs to try modeling. She started slowly while she was still in school. She once said:
I would do anything and everything. I would do fashion shows in the back parking lot of a department store for free. I would work for $5 an hour, which was great money for me at the time. I was thrilled. I just worked hard.
When she was a senior in high school, she posed for a swimsuit ad. The ad appeared in Seventeen magazine and helped start her modeling career. She went to California State University, Los Angeles to study English, but she left before her third year to focus on modeling.
Career as a Supermodel and Designer
Rise to Fame
Tiegs's big break came when she was 17. The editors at Glamour magazine saw her swimsuit ad and hired her for a photoshoot. This led to her first cover for Glamour. Soon after, she was on the covers of Seventeen and Elle. She later appeared on the covers of other major fashion magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
She became even more famous for her appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was the first model to be on its cover twice. In 1978, she was featured on the cover of Time magazine for a story called "The All-American Model."
A year later, she signed a $1.5 million contract with Cover Girl cosmetics. At the time, it was the biggest contract a model had ever received.

Business and Television
In 1980, Tiegs started her own line of clothing and accessories for the department store Sears. This was a new idea for a supermodel at the time. The collection was very successful, earning nearly $1 billion by 1989. Because of this success, she appeared on the cover of Time again.
In 1995, she launched Cheryl Tiegs Sportwear, which was sold on the TV shopping channel QVC. She also created a line of wigs and hair products for Revlon.
Tiegs has also appeared on many television shows. In 2012, she was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice to raise money for charity. She had a recurring role playing herself in the animated show Family Guy. She also served as a judge on the reality show True Beauty.
Charity Work and Activism
Tiegs uses her fame to help others. She is active in many charities and serves on the board of organizations that help children. She is also a spokesperson for City of Hope, a famous cancer treatment center.
