Discovering Chesterfield Gorge

Chesterfield Gorge is a deep, narrow valley, almost like a mini-canyon. It was first formed by huge amounts of water from melting glaciers long ago. This powerful water carved through the hard rock, called metamorphic bedrock. Even today, the East Branch of the Westfield River continues to shape the gorge.

Explore the Gorge Walls

The walls of the gorge are very steep. In some spots, they drop more than 30 feet (about 9 meters)! It might look fun to go down to the bottom when the water is low, but it's not safe. There are no trails leading from the top of the cliff to the river below. Also, rock climbing is not allowed here.

Wildlife and Trails

The forest around the gorge is full of different trees like oak, pine, and hemlock. It's also home to many animals! You might spot bears, bobcats, or turkeys if you're lucky. There's a half-mile trail along the top of the cliff. This trail gives you amazing views of the gorge, the river, and the beautiful forest. Don't worry, there's a railing along the cliff to keep everyone safe. You'll also see lots of huge boulders scattered along the cliff edge.

A Glimpse into History

Long ago, there was a bridge that crossed the river right here. It was part of an old road connecting Boston, Massachusetts to Albany, New York. All that's left of it today are some stone foundations.

The Old Bridge and the American Revolution

During the American Revolution, British soldiers marched over this very bridge! They were heading to Boston after General Burgoyne's army was defeated at Saratoga, New York. Sadly, in 1835, a big flood washed away the bridge. It also destroyed some nearby mills that used the river's power. Today, you can take a short trail upstream from the gorge to see the remains of this old bridge.

Fun Activities at the Gorge

Chesterfield Gorge is a gateway to a much larger natural area along the Westfield River. This river is so special that it's called a National Wild and Scenic River.

Fishing Adventures

One popular activity here is fly fishing for trout. It's a great spot to try and catch these fish! Sometimes, Atlantic salmon are also released into the river. If you catch a salmon, you must release it back into the water. It's against the rules to keep them, so make sure you know the difference between trout and salmon!

Another Chesterfield Gorge?

It's a bit confusing, but there's another natural area also named Chesterfield Gorge. This one is located in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. They are two different places, so make sure you're heading to the right one!
