Cathedral Design and Style
The Chilpancingo Cathedral was built in the Neoclassical style. This style is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman buildings. It has a grand and balanced look. The cathedral has a single main area inside, called a nave.
The Main Entrance
The front of the cathedral, called the main portal, has two main parts. It features wooden panels. The first part has rough, textured stone blocks. The second part has a large window for the choir. This window is framed by two square columns. On the sides of this section, you can see two large round decorations called medallions.
Top Features
The arches of the second section hold up a triangular shape called a pediment. At the very top, there is a special frontispiece. This part shows the eagle from the imperial coat of arms of Agustín de Iturbide.
A Place of History
This cathedral is not just a church; it's also a place where important history happened. On September 13, 1813, General José María Morelos y Pavón chose this spot for the First Congress of Anáhuac. During this congress, he declared himself the "Servant of the Nation." He also presented the Act of Independence and a famous document called the Sentimientos de la Nación ('Feelings of the Nation'). These documents were very important for Mexico's independence.
Recent Events
The cathedral has stood for many years. However, during an earthquake on December 10, 2011, the building suffered some damage to its structure.
