Chisel Peak is a cool mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It's called Chisel Peak because its top looks like a chisel, a tool used for carving! This mountain is 3,046-metre (9,993-foot) tall. That's over 3 kilometers high!
You can find Chisel Peak in Hamber Provincial Park. It stands proudly above the south shore of Fortress Lake. The closest taller mountain is Ghost Mountain, which is about 5.9 km (3.7 mi) away to the southwest.
To the south, about 8 km (5.0 mi) away, is the Chaba Icefield. This is a huge area of ice and snow. The Continental Divide, which separates rivers flowing to different oceans, is about 6 km (3.7 mi) to the east.
How Chisel Peak Was Formed
Chisel Peak is made of sedimentary rock. This type of rock forms when layers of sand, mud, and tiny bits of plants and animals settle over millions of years. These layers were laid down a very, very long time ago, during periods called the Precambrian and Cambrian.
Later, a huge event called the Laramide orogeny happened. This was when big forces pushed the Earth's crust. It caused these old rock layers to fold and lift up, forming mountains like Chisel Peak. The rocks were even pushed over younger rocks!
What's the Weather Like?
Chisel Peak has a subarctic climate. This means it gets very cold and snowy winters. Temperatures can drop below -20 °C (that's -4 °F!). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 °C (-22 °F).
Summers are mild, not too hot. If you want to visit or climb, the best time is usually from July to September. The weather is much nicer then for exploring the area.
