Choi Sung-yong (Hangul: 최성용; born on December 25, 1975) is a former South Korean football player. He was known for playing as a wing-back or midfielder. Choi was famous for his great stamina and focus during games. He was also excellent at man-to-man defense, which means closely marking an opponent. A notable moment was when he focused on marking Hidetoshi Nakata. Nakata was considered the best Asian player at that time. This happened when South Korea played against Japan in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Choi played for the South Korea national team as a right-back. He participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was also chosen for the national team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, he did not play in any matches during that tournament. After the 2002 World Cup, he joined Suwon Samsung Bluewings. He helped his club win the K League title.

Starting Out and Club Career

Choi Sung-yong was born on December 25, 1975, in Masan, South Korea. He started his football journey in college. From 1994 to 1996, he played for Korea University. After college, he joined Sangmu FC in 1997. This was part of his national service.

In 1999, Choi moved to Japan to play for Vissel Kobe. He played 51 games for them. In 2001, he moved to Austria to play for LASK Linz. He played 19 games there and scored one goal.

Returning to Korea and Later Clubs

Choi came back to South Korea in 2002. He joined Suwon Samsung Bluewings. This was a very successful time for him. He played 78 games and scored one goal for the club. He helped them win many titles.

Later, he played for other clubs. These included Yokohama FC in Japan (2006-2007) and Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i in South Korea (2007). He finished his playing career in Japan with Thespa Kusatsu from 2008 to 2010. Overall, he played 226 club games and scored 2 goals.

Choi Sung-yong was an important player for the South Korean national team. He played for various youth teams before joining the senior team.

  • From 1994 to 1996, he played for the South Korea Under-23 team. He played 44 games for them. He also represented South Korea in the 1996 Summer Olympics football tournament.

Choi played for the senior South Korea from 1995 to 2003. He earned 65 caps (appearances) and scored 1 goal for his country.

He was a key player in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He played as a right-back in that tournament. He was also selected for the 2002 FIFA World Cup squad. This World Cup was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. Even though he didn't play in 2002, being part of the squad was a big achievement. He also helped South Korea win a bronze medal at the 2000 AFC Asian Cup.
