Chouteau /ʃoʊˈtoʊ/ is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. It's the second-largest town in the county. In 2010, about 2,097 people lived there. This was a small increase from the 1,931 people counted in 2000. By 2020, the population was 2,059.

Geography of Chouteau
Chouteau covers about 3.36 square miles (8.71 square kilometers) of land. It's located close to where two major roads, U.S. Route 69 and U.S. Route 412, meet. This makes it easy to travel to and from the town.
History of Chouteau
Chouteau was first called Cody's Creek. In 1871, it became a stop on the Katy railroad. This helped it grow into a busy town known for cattle.
The town's name was later changed to Chouteau. It was named after a nearby creek. This creek was named for Auguste Pierre Chouteau, a French fur trader. Auguste Chouteau was important because he started the first lasting white settlement in what is now Salina, Oklahoma.
