Hanukkah bush
A Hanukkah bush that some Jewish families display in their homes for the duration of Hanukkah and Christmas. Unlike a Christmas tree it would be without any Christianity-themed ornaments and use the colour blue.

Chrismukkah is a fun word that mixes two holidays: Christmas (from Christianity) and Hanukkah (from Judaism). It describes how some families celebrate both holidays together. This idea first appeared in German-speaking countries in the 1800s. After World War II, it became very popular in the United States and other countries.

The TV show The O.C. made the word "Chrismukkah" famous in December 2003. A character named Seth Cohen created the holiday. He did this because his parents came from different religious backgrounds. His father was Jewish and his mother was Protestant. Even families who are all Jewish might celebrate Christmas in a non-religious way, just for fun.

How Chrismukkah Started

Hanukkah usually begins around the end of November or December. This is very close to Christmas. This closeness created a "December Dilemma" for Jewish families. They lived in places where most people celebrated Christmas.

The idea of blending Hanukkah and Christmas informally began in the 1800s. This happened in Germany and Austria. In German, it was called Weihnukka. This word combines "Weihnachten" (Christmas) and "Hanukkah."

In the 1800s, Christmas became a big family holiday in Germany. It was about family and giving, not just religion. Many Christmas traditions, like the Christmas tree and gifts, felt more like general winter customs. Because Hanukkah was close to Christmas, some Jewish families started to mix traditions. They might have a decorated tree or give gifts.

Modern Jewish families, especially, adopted parts of Christmas. For example, giving Hanukkah gifts or money became common in the 1800s. Some Jewish families even celebrated Christmas as a non-religious winter festival. The first Christmas tree in Vienna was set up in 1814 by a Jewish woman. Even Theodor Herzl, a famous Jewish leader, had a tree for his children. He even suggested calling it a "Hanukkah Tree."

Some common blended traditions included:

  • A Hanukkah bush or Hanukkah tree, like a Christmas tree.
  • A "Hanukkah Man" who brought gifts, similar to Santa Claus.
  • A Hanukkah calendar with eight doors, like an advent calendar.

After the Holocaust, Jewish life in Europe changed greatly. Many Jewish people moved to the United States. There, it became common for families to celebrate both holidays. This was often because of interfaith marriages. Both partners wanted to keep their own traditions. Jewish families wanted something special like Christmas, with its gifts and celebrations. Giving gifts for Hanukkah helped make it feel equally important.

Chrismukkah in Pop Culture

In the 1990s, the popular TV show Friends showed Jewish characters celebrating Christmas. This reflected how many American Jewish families celebrated Christmas in a non-religious way.

The word "Chrismukkah" became very famous with the FOX TV show The O.C. (2003–2007). The show's creator, Josh Schwartz, used the holiday to show his own experiences. He was a Jewish kid from the East Coast. He felt like an outsider when he went to college in California. The show was about outsiders, and Seth Cohen's mixed family (half-Jewish, half-Christian) made them outsiders too. Seth created Chrismukkah to celebrate his unique family.

On The O.C., Seth Cohen said he created Chrismukkah when he was six. He called it "the greatest superholiday known to mankind." The show had Chrismukkah episodes every season. Seth explained it as "eight days of presents, followed by one day of many presents." The Cohen family would display both a Christmas tree and a Hanukkah menorah. On Christmas Day, they would eat Chinese takeout and watch movies like It's a Wonderful Life and Fiddler on the Roof. Chrismukkah was also mentioned in the TV show Grey's Anatomy.

In 2004, Ron and Michelle Gompertz started Chrismukkah.com. They were a Jewish-Christian couple. Their website took the idea from The O.C. and made it real. They sold funny Chrismukkah cards and shared stories about the holiday. Chrismukkah.com helped make the holiday popular even for people who didn't watch the show. Some groups, like the New York Catholic League and the New York Board of Rabbis, did not like Chrismukkah. They said it was "insulting" to both Jews and Christians.

In December 2004, Time magazine listed Chrismukkah as a popular new word. It was also added to the "Chambers" dictionary. Ron Gompertz wrote a cookbook called Chrismukkah! The Merry Mish-Mash Holiday Cookbook in 2005. He also wrote Chrismukkah – Everything You Need to Know to Celebrate the Hybrid Holiday in 2006. Another book, Chrismukkah: The Official Guide to the World's Best-Loved Holiday, came out around the same time.
