Messianic Judaism facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Messianic Judaism is a special group of Jews. They believe that Jesus, who they call Yeshua (his Hebrew name), is the Jewish Messiah. They also try to live their lives in a Jewish way. This often means following the rules of the Torah, which are Jewish teachings. People in this group are called Messianic Jews. However, most other types of Judaism do not see Messianic Judaism as part of Judaism. They usually think it is more like a type of Christianity. This is because traditional Judaism does not believe Jesus/Yeshua is the Jewish Messiah.

What is Messianic Judaism?

Messianic Judaism is a religious movement. It combines beliefs from both Judaism and Christianity. Followers believe in Jesus (Yeshua) as the Messiah. But they also keep many Jewish traditions and customs. This makes them different from most Christians and most Jews.

What Do Messianic Jews Believe?

The main belief of Messianic Jews is that Jesus (Yeshua) is the long-awaited Jewish Messiah. In Judaism, the Messiah is a leader sent by God to bring peace and justice to the world. Messianic Jews believe Yeshua fulfilled the prophecies about the Messiah. They also believe he is divine, like many Christians do.

They believe in the Tanakh, which is the Hebrew Bible. This includes the Torah, the first five books. They also believe in the New Testament, which tells about Jesus' life and teachings.

How Do They Practice Their Faith?

Messianic Jews try to live a Jewish lifestyle. They often celebrate Jewish holidays like Passover and Yom Kippur. They might also keep kosher dietary laws. Many attend services in places called "Messianic synagogues." These services often include Hebrew prayers, Jewish music, and readings from both the Old and New Testaments.

They often use Jewish symbols. These can include the Star of David and the menorah. They also use Hebrew words in their worship and daily life.

How Is It Different from Other Judaism?

Most branches of Judaism do not accept Messianic Judaism as a form of Judaism. This is because traditional Judaism does not believe Jesus is the Messiah. They are still waiting for the Messiah to come. Because of this main difference, many Jewish communities see Messianic Judaism as a form of Christianity.

Messianic Jews, however, see themselves as Jewish. They believe they are continuing their Jewish heritage while also following Yeshua. This difference in views can sometimes lead to debates and disagreements.
