A Look Back: Christ Church's Story
Building the Church
The land for Christ Church was given by Algernon Grey Tollemache. A carpenter named Sidney Hirst built the church. He was from Yorkshire. The building was finished in late 1853.
This timber church is very interesting because it was built without using any nails. This was a special way to construct buildings back then.
Protecting History
In the 1950s, people worked hard to protect Christ Church. These efforts helped create the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. This trust helps look after important historical places in New Zealand.
A Challenge and Restoration
In 1989, a fire caused by an arsonist damaged the church. About one-third of the inside was destroyed. However, the church was carefully put back together. Workers used old photos and building plans to restore it.
