Founding and Early Years

Christ Church began on May 5, 1825. A Reverend named Lot Jones started it during a trip through Georgia. This happened just three years after Macon officially became a city. It was the first church ever established there.

In 1826, an important meeting for the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia was held at the church in Macon. A Bishop named Nathaniel Bowen from South Carolina led the meeting.

Building and Changes

The first church building was built in 1834. It was officially dedicated, or "consecrated," in 1838. To "consecrate" a church means to make it sacred for religious use.

On February 24, 1844, Thomas Fielding Scott became a priest in this building. He was ordained by Bishop Stephen Elliott. To be "ordained" means to be officially made a priest.

In 1851, the first church building was taken down. A new, larger building was constructed in its place. This new building was designed in the Gothic style, which has tall arches and pointed windows. Bishop Elliott consecrated this new building on May 2, 1852.

War and Later Events

In October 1863, during the American Civil War, the church donated its large bell. It was given to the Macon Arsenal to help with the war effort. A new bell replaced it in 1868.

On December 19, 1867, a famous poet named Sidney Lanier got married at Christ Church.

On July 14, 1971, the church was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places important to American history.

In 1999, a special organ made by a company called Fisk was put into the main part of the church.
