Discovering Christ Church's Past
The current church building is not the first one on this spot. Two other church buildings stood here before. The first one was built in 1766. It was a smaller building located at the north end of the graveyard.
The second church was built in 1795. It was larger and stood across from the first building. The current church building was started in 1826. It was officially opened in 1847. Many people believe a famous architect named Alexander Jackson Davis helped design it.
Inside the Christ Church, you can see some very old and special items. The church still has the original Bible and Book of Common Prayer. These were given to the church in 1762 all the way from England. Imagine how many people have used them over the centuries!
Christ Church Today
The church building you see today is a great example of Carpenter Gothic style. This is a type of Neo-Gothic architecture. It often uses wood to look like grand stone churches.
Christ Church is a very active part of the Trumbull community. They have services both online and in person every Sunday. The church also works to help people around the world, in their region, and right in their town.
They offer many activities for everyone:
- Regular meditation and prayer groups
- Special ministries for children
- Fun gatherings for everyone to meet and chat
The church also cares about important issues like environmental justice. They pray for our environment and take care of their gardens. They even have a "Wandering Church" service. This is a full church service held during hikes!
The main goal of Christ Church is simple: "We open our hearts to Christ and our arms to all." This means they welcome everyone. They focus on prayer, worship, and learning from the Bible.
The Tashua Burial Ground
Next to the church is the Tashua Burial Ground. This historic cemetery has been here since 1766. It is a quiet and peaceful place. Many people from the church's long history are buried here. It reminds us of the many generations who have been part of this community.
