The Christian Social Union of Bavaria, often called CSU, is a political party in the German state of Bavaria. It is known for its traditional values and aims to keep things stable.

In Germany's national parliament, called the Bundestag, the CSU works closely with another big party, the CDU. Together, they form a major group that represents the center-right side of politics in Germany. The current leader of the CSU is Markus Söder.

What is the CSU?

The CSU is a political party that mainly focuses on the state of Bavaria. It is considered a "conservative" party. This means it often supports traditional ways of life and values. It also believes in strong communities and families.

The CSU is different from other parties because it only runs in elections in Bavaria. However, it is a very important part of the national government in Germany.

History of the CSU

The CSU was started in 1945, right after World War II. The first local groups were formed in cities like Würzburg and Munich. By January 1946, the party was officially founded for all of Bavaria.

Since then, the CSU has won every state election in Bavaria. Sometimes, to form a government, they have had to team up with other parties. These teams are called "coalitions." They have worked with parties like the Bayernpartei, the FDP, or the SPD.

At the national level, the CSU always joins forces with the CDU. They work together to make decisions for the whole country. The CSU is often seen as a bit more traditional than the CDU.

One very famous leader of the CSU was Franz Josef Strauß. He was a powerful politician who led the party for many years. He was known for his strong opinions and his work for Bavaria.

What the CSU believes in

The CSU's main ideas come from the people of Bavaria, especially those living in the countryside and smaller towns. The party traditionally tries to find a balance between old traditions and helping people in society.

In the past, the CSU focused a lot on "social welfare," which means making sure people have support and care. More recently, the party has started to support "free market beliefs." This means they think businesses should have more freedom and less government control.
