Discovering the Christkindlmarket's Past
The very first Christkindlmarket in Chicago was held in 1996. It was started by the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest. The idea for this market came from a famous Christmas market in Nuremberg, Germany. That market is called the Christkindlesmarkt.
In 1997, the Mayor Daley asked for the festival to move. It then moved to Daley Plaza, where it is still held today. That year, more than 750,000 people visited the market. By 1999, the Christkindlmarket became part of the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.
Over the years, Chicago's Christkindlmarket has grown a lot. It is now the biggest Christmas market in the United States. More than 1 million people visit it every year. In 2016, the market even opened a new location in Naperville, a Chicago suburb. In 2020, a virtual market was held online.
What You Can Find at the Market
The Christkindlmarket is set up around a large Christmas tree at Daley Plaza. You can also see a small nativity scene there. The market offers lots of entertainment for visitors. You can enjoy performances from Christmas choirs and dance groups. There are also brass bands playing festive music.
