About the Chrysoma Plant
For a long time, scientists thought there were many different types of Chrysoma plants. More than 20 names were given to plants in this group. However, most of these plants were later moved to other plant groups. These groups include Ericameria, Xylothamia, Solidago (also known as goldenrod), and Gundlachia.
The Only Remaining Species
Today, only one species is still called Chrysoma. Its full name is Chrysoma pauciflosculosa. This special plant grows naturally in the southeastern United States. You can find it in states like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
What Chrysoma pauciflosculosa Looks Like
Chrysoma pauciflosculosa is a type of shrub. This means it is a woody plant that branches out from near the ground. It is an evergreen shrub, so its leaves stay green all year round.
This plant can grow up to 100 cm (39 in) (about 39 inches) tall. It has a sticky substance called resin on it, but it does not have any hairs.
Its Flowers
The flowers of Chrysoma pauciflosculosa are bright yellow. They grow in dense, flat-topped groups. Each group has many small flower heads. Sometimes, these flower heads do not have any ray florets. Ray florets are like the "petals" you see on a daisy. Other times, they might have two or three ray florets. Each flower head also has a few disc florets, usually between two and five. Disc florets are the tiny flowers in the center of a daisy-like flower head.
