John Arthur "Chubby" Cox III (born December 29, 1955) is an American former professional basketball player. He is best known by his nickname, Chubby. He played as a guard, a position that often involves handling the ball and scoring points.
Chubby Cox was chosen by the Chicago Bulls in the 1978 NBA draft. This is a special event where professional basketball teams pick new players. He later played for the Washington Bullets for one season. Before becoming a professional, he played college basketball for the Villanova Wildcats and San Francisco Dons.

Early Life and College Basketball
Chubby Cox was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up to be a tall basketball player, standing 6 feet 2 inches (about 188 cm) tall. He went to Roxborough High School in Philadelphia.
After high school, he played college basketball at Villanova University for two years. Then, he moved to the University of San Francisco (USF). At USF, he was a star player and is still remembered for his many assists in a single season. An assist is when a player passes the ball to a teammate who then scores.
Professional Basketball Career
Chubby Cox was drafted by the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1978. He was the 7th pick in the 8th round of the draft. Even though he was drafted, he didn't join an NBA team right away.
He finally played in the NBA during the 1982–83 NBA season. He joined the Washington Bullets and played in seven games. During these games, he scored a total of 29 points.
Before playing in the NBA, Cox played professionally in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). This league was a step below the NBA. He played in the CBA from 1978 to 1981. He played for teams like the Philadelphia Kings and the Wilkes-Barre Barons. Over three seasons, he averaged almost 22 points per game, which is a great scoring average. In one game on December 28, 1979, he scored an amazing 50 points against the Lancaster Red Roses. He also played professional basketball in Venezuela for a team called Beverley Hills in Caracas.
Family Connections
Chubby Cox married Victoria, who was a cheerleader at the University of San Francisco. They have a son named John. Their son John was born in Venezuela and also became a professional basketball player there. He plays for the Venezuelan national team.
Chubby Cox has other famous family members in basketball. His brother-in-law was Joe Bryant, who was also a former NBA player. Joe Bryant's son, and Chubby Cox's nephew, was Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant was a legendary basketball player and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
