Chungju's History
Chungju has an interesting history. During a time called Hideyoshi's Invasions of Korea, a big battle happened here. This was the Battle of Chungju. A Korean general named Shin Rip fought against a Japanese general, Konishi Yukinaga. Sadly, the Korean general was defeated. Because of this loss, the king at that time, King Seonjo, had to leave his capital city, Hanseong (which is now Seoul). He moved to Pyongyang for safety.
Chungju Lake and Dam
Chungju Dam is the biggest dam in South Korea. It helps connect Chungju with its nearby areas. The dam created a huge man-made lake. This lake is called Chungju Lake.
Near the lake, you can find Woraksan Mt and Songnae valley. There are also some interesting caves and natural springs in this area.
World Rowing Championships

Chungju was also supposed to host another important rowing event. This was the Asia and Oceania Qualification Regatta. It would have decided who could go to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, this event was canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Chungju Apples
Chungju is very well-known for growing delicious apples. There are good reasons for this. The area gets lots of sunshine. Also, there's a big difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. This climate is perfect for apples.
People started growing apples here about 300 years ago. The first apple trees came from China. In 1912, Chungju officially began planting apple trees. By 2009, there were over 1,871 hectares (about 4,623 acres) of apple farms. They produced more than 41,592 tons of apples! Chungju grows the most apples in the Chungcheongbuk-do province.
