South Chungcheong Province is a vibrant region located in western South Korea. It is known for being one of the richest and fastest-growing areas in the country. The main city and capital of the province is Hongseong.

History of South Chungcheong Province
The area that is now South Chungcheong Province has a long and interesting past.
Ancient Beginnings
Long ago, this region was part of Mahan. Mahan was an ancient tribal country in Korea. Later, another kingdom called Baekje took over Mahan. So, the land became part of the Baekje kingdom.
Changes Through Dynasties
During the Goryeo Dynasty, this area was grouped with what is now Gyeonggi-do and North Chungcheong. This larger region was called 'Gwangyang-do'.
Later, in the Joseon Dynasty, South Chungcheong and North Chungcheong were combined. They formed a larger area known as Chungcheong-do.
Becoming South Chungcheong
On October 4, 1896, Chungcheong-do was split into two separate provinces. This is how South Chungcheong Province was officially created.

South Chungcheong Province covers an area of about 8,204 square kilometers. This makes it the 6th largest province in South Korea.
