A Look at the Church's Past
The Church of St Andrew was first built in the 1300s. Parts of the church, like the main hall (called the nave) and the area around the altar (called the chancel), were rebuilt in 1821. The whole building was also repaired and updated in 1878 by Charles Benson.
Where the Church Stands
The church is built very close to the River Yeo. It's also on the site of an even older Roman building and a cemetery from Roman times. This area was also next to an ancient Roman road called the Fosse Way.
Long ago, during the Saxon era, there was a special church called a minster here. It belonged to Glastonbury Abbey. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the church was owned by Maurice, who was the Bishop of London. Later, in 1219, it was given to St. John's hospital in Bridgwater.
What the Church Looks Like
The Church of St Andrew is made of stone. It has special decorative stone called hamstone and a roof covered with clay tiles. The main part of the church, the nave, has three sections. The chancel, where the altar is, has two sections. There is also a room for the organ and a vestry, which is a room where clergy prepare.
The Church Tower
The church has a tall tower with three levels. This tower is supported by strong corner buttresses, which are like stone supports. It also has a round staircase tower on one side.
